TIPS FOR YOUR CHILDREN

  • Study. Prepare yourself for college life now by developing good study habits. Not only should students do their homework, but also extra projects if they can--especially if high school seems too easy.
  • Seek advice and help if you need it. If you are having trouble in a certain subject, find a student, counselor, teacher or parent that can help you.
  • Get your family involved in your education. Parents should learn to ask questions and hold educators accountable for their children's education. When parents or guardians haven't been to college, they may think they can't help you. This is simply not true. Parents should talk to counselors and ask questions such as: "How can my child be prepared? What are the required courses? Does the school offer them? Is my child in them?" Once parents learn the path students need to follow, they can help you stay on it. Without their support, the road to college is rough.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities--especially those that interest you. Colleges are not only looking at academic records, but also for a well-rounded student who will bring something special to their campus.
  • Do not settle for easy high school classes. Take the most challenging classes possible and work hard at them. Good grades are great, but taking challenging classes and developing good study habits are more important, and can help assure your acceptance in top universities.
