MIDDLE SCHOOL

Middle school is a critical time in a student's development and the classes they take are important first steps towards college. Parents need to be involved in their children's curriculum and should meet with the guidance counselor at least once during the year to go over their children's curriculum. Parents also need to insist that their children take the PSAT, a practice test for the SAT.

The following are a few suggestions for parents of middle school students:

  • Encourage your children to take pre-algebra
  • Make sure that they choose electives in computers and a foreign language
  • Encourage them to take the PSAT in 8th grade (it's not too early)
  • Encourage them to go on the school-sponsored field trip to high school
  • Meet with a 9th grade counselor
  • Encourage your children to participate in "bridge" or college awareness programs
