STUDENTS AND APPLICATIONS

Dear IESF Applicant,

The process of applying to colleges and universities is exciting but cumbersome. In order to be successful in this process, we advise that you be organized and systematic. Here are 10 key recommendations you should follow:

  1. Use the internet to take virtual tours of the campuses in which you are interested.

  2. Include your family members in this exciting process. You can inspire your younger brothers and sisters by including them in this important step you are taking. Also many colleges and universities offer information in Spanish for those of us whose parents prefer to read information in their native language.

  3. Become familiar with the following websites:
    (a) CSU Mentor:[https://secure.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/]
    (b) UC Pathways: [http://www.ucop.edu/pathways/]
    (c) Callifornia Colleges [http://www.californiacolleges.edu/]
    (d) California Community Colleges: [http://www.cccco.edu/].

  4. Apply to your local community college.

  5. Apply to at least 1 California State University campus between October 1, to November 30, 2009, for fall 2010.

  6. Apply to at least 1 University of California campus. Admissions application fees are $60 per UC campus. Eligible low-income students can apply for an admissions application fee waiver for up to 4 campuses. The application filing period is between November 1 to November 30, 2009, for fall 2010.

  7. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents must complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (the FAFSA).

  8. Visit the California Student Aid Commission website and follow the instructions to apply for the Cal Grant Programs.

  9. Divide your application process in 3 or 4 major areas for follow-up:
    (a) Admissions,
    (b) Financial Aid,
    © Housing, and
    (d) for college students who are parents - child care.

  10. Establish personal contact with admissions, financial aid, and academic counseling contacts at the colleges and universities where you are going to apply. Keep their names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses nearby.
